What does 情绪价值 mean?
情绪价值 is what someone leaves you with emotionally: the sense of being cheered up, soothed, understood or praised. Chinese speakers treat it as something that can be given (给) or provided (提供), so a partner, a flatmate, a puppy, a product or even a manager can be said to supply it, and 情绪价值拉满 means the supply is maxed out. The complaint runs the other way, that a person who never reacts to how you feel gives zero. What makes the phrase interesting is that it borrows the language of accounting for something that resists accounting: plenty of people use it warmly, others use it to keep score in a relationship, and that second habit is what its critics object to.
Where does 情绪价值 come from?
Marketing people used it first, to name the emotional benefit a customer takes home on top of a product's practical use. By around 2023 it had slipped into ordinary talk about dating, friendship and the workplace. 《咬文嚼字》 slotted 情绪价值 into its top ten buzzwords for 2023; the National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center came back for it later, listing it among the top internet buzzwords of 2025.
