What does 大神 mean?

On a Chinese forum the thread nobody could solve gets closed by one user's four-paragraph answer, and the replies underneath say 膝盖已献上: I offer my knees. That user is a 大神, “great god,” the highest compliment the Chinese internet pays to skill. Games have their own version, the carry who wins a 1v5 while the rest of the team spectates. Students say 学神 for the person at the top of the ranking, programmers say 技术大神 for the developer whose code everybody reads. A proverb travels with it, 大神在民间, the gods walk among us, and that is the real point: the title belongs to anonymous strangers at least as often as to celebrities. Asking one for help begins with 大神求带. It sits above 高手, above 普通玩家, above 菜鸟, and every 菜鸟 has imagined being called 大神 once.

Where does 大神 come from?

大神 is an old word. It named deities and masters of folk religion long before the internet found it, and its modern career began on the BBS boards of the 2000s, Tianya and Mop above all, where regulars anointed the posters whose threads everybody read. Games turned it into mass vocabulary in the 2010s. Esports pros and unidentifiable solo-queue monsters collected the same title, and highlight reels gathered millions of knee-offering comments underneath. From there it went anywhere mastery was visible: a street-food chef working one grill for thirty years, a student with a perfect gaokao score. Chinese internet speech now reaches for 大神 where English would reach for “legend.”
