What does brainrot mean?

Brainrot is both the content and the damage. The label covers videos built to hold attention while offering almost nothing: talking toilets, gameplay footage split under a story, AI voices reading fake arguments, clips of skibidi chaos on loop. It also names the feeling afterward, the fog of having watched four of them in bed instead of sleeping. People use it about their own feeds as a joke, which has softened it into a badge of honor for the genre.

Where does brainrot come from?

Oxford University Press named brain rot its word of the year for 2024, and noted that the phrase is not new: it traced the first recorded use to Henry David Thoreau, who complained in Walden in 1854 that people preferred easy ideas to serious ones. The modern sense formed on TikTok and YouTube in the early 2020s, where low-effort edits multiplied faster than anyone could watch them.

How to use brainrot

  • I opened TikTok for five minutes before bed and resurfaced two hours later in full brainrot mode.
  • My feed is 90 percent brainrot and I refuse to apologize for it.
