What does 问号 mean?

After your teammate throws a 3v1, the reply in Chinese chat is never words. It is “???”, a complete rebuttal of that person's life choices. 问号 in a game lobby is never a genuine question. A single mark pings confusion, an enemy typing one into all chat right after you outplay them is salt in its purest form, and Chinese servers built a dialect out of quantity: one for confusion, three for contempt, a full row for a funeral. Dota 2 pushed it furthest, where the “?” ping shows a hero portrait asking a silent question and became performance art for psychological warfare.

Where does 问号 come from?

Dota 2 supplied the canonical form around 2017. Chinese players spammed the “?” quick-chat ping on local servers until it crossed into the international client and became the game's universal emote of doubt. Away from Dota the same ??? had already been living for years in QQ groups and forum threads. It is standard equipment wherever Chinese players turn up, being one character that requires no translation.
