What does 苏超 mean?
苏超 is what people call the Jiangsu Province City Football League (江苏省城市足球联赛), built the way 英超 stands for the Premier League. The nickname covers the matches, but even more the noise around them: Jiangsu's thirteen cities, known as 十三太保 or the thirteen guardians, spend the season teasing one another online. Fans pick at a rival city's food and history, local businesses join in, official city accounts trade digs, and much of the audience follows none of the football. The slogan everyone repeats is 比赛第一,友谊第十四, competition first, friendship fourteenth, which flips the familiar friendship-first formula by pointing out that there are only thirteen teams. From there ×超 became a ready-made pattern for other regional leagues.
Where does 苏超 come from?
10 May 2025 was the opening day, with Jiangsu's provincial sports bureau co-organising alongside the city governments. What kept it in the feed was the banter between fans, city government accounts and brands; by mid-July the coverage had produced 171 trending topics and nearly three billion views, per Xinhua. 《咬文嚼字》 then counted 苏超 among its top ten buzzwords for 2025.
