What does 上分 mean?
上分 is what you call winning ranked games on purpose: grinding the ladder from Bronze upward, one match at a time, with the standings as the only thing that counts. An 上分车队 is a squad assembled purely for that, skilled strangers who queue together to win efficiently rather than to enjoy themselves. What got interesting is what happened outside gaming. Any measurable gain started being described as scoring points, so a rewritten resume is 简历上分, a dinner where your mother-in-law takes to you is 丈母娘上分, and a gym selfie posted for approval is 朋友圈上分. The opposite, 掉分, works the same way: you can 掉分 in a match or on a first date. Underneath is the joke that life turned out to have a ladder too, and no off-season.
Where does 上分 come from?
Ranked ladders arrived with League of Legends around 2012 and became unavoidable with 王者荣耀 from 2015, whose tier names entered everyday vocabulary: 青铜 for Bronze, 王者 for King. 上分 was just the verb for climbing them. It left gaming around 2018 and 2019, when young Chinese began describing jobs, dating and the gym in competitive terms, and it travelled together with 躺平, one word for the ladder and one for lying down beside it. “今晚不上分” became a complete statement of intent.
