What does mewing mean?
Mewing is posture for the face: rest the whole tongue against the roof of the mouth, breathe through the nose, keep the jaw closed, and wait for a sharper jawline. Whether it works is debated by actual orthodontists, but teenagers adopted it as a discipline anyway, complete with streaks and progress photos. The finger pressed sideways against the jaw became the hand signal, a way to say the mouth is busy improving itself.
Where does mewing come from?
The technique is named after John Mew, a British orthodontist who, with his son Mike, has argued since the 1970s that tongue posture shapes how the face grows. The internet shortened the theory into one word, and around 2023 it moved from looksmaxxing forums onto TikTok, then into classrooms, where the finger gesture annoyed teachers through 2024.
How to use mewing
- Every time the teacher asked a question, half the class pressed a finger to their jaw. Mewing again.
- I have been mewing for three months and the only thing that changed is my neck hurts.
