What does 就这 mean?

就这, usually typed as 就这? or stretched into 就这?就这?, is the shortest way to say “that's all you've got?”. It is aimed at someone who just showed off a score, a purchase, an argument or a play in a game, and the answer it implies is that none of it impresses anyone. Streamers fire it at opponents, fans fire it at rival idols, friends fire it at each other after a weak joke. Two characters are enough for a complete reply, which makes it hard to answer without sounding defensive.

Where does 就这 come from?

Long a staple of live-stream chats, the taunt went mainstream in 2020: the platform Douyu counted around 40 million comments reading 就这? in its year-end review and put the line among the year's ten most-posted danmaku phrases, a figure reported by outlets such as 界面新闻 in January 2021. From gaming streams it crossed into Weibo and short-video apps, where it became the default caption for a disappointing reveal.
