What does 菜 mean?
“没事、我菜” is what a Chinese player types after carrying the entire match, and everybody in the lobby knows it means the opposite. The word is 菜, vegetable, or a dish; in game chat it never means food. It means bad. 很菜 for very bad, 菜鸡 for the hopeless noob, 太菜了 for the teammate who has already fed the game away. Mechanics, judgment, a whole roster's competence, all of it collapses into one syllable. It lands softer than 垃圾, trash, so friends trade it daily as affection rather than insult. It is also what remains when you file 菜鸟, rookie, down to a single character. On an international server a teammate typing “cai” is a review, not a vegetable order.
Where does 菜 come from?
Taiwanese BBS boards and the first mainland forums of the 2000s were where 菜鸟 circulated, a label for newcomers that compared the clueless to birds not yet out of the nest. Gamers sanded it down to a single character. League of Legends and Dota 2 lobbies did the rest, turning 菜 into background radiation: every match produced some, and the fact that one syllable could carry a full verdict made it unusually easy to export. It is now standard vocabulary on CN-populated servers worldwide.
