What does 塌房 mean?
“My holiday trip 塌房了”, cancelled before it even started. That is how far the phrase has travelled from fandom. 塌房, literally “house collapse”, is the moment a celebrity, idol or influencer's public image caves in: cheating exposés, crimes, tax evasion, contract fraud, or simply being caught as the exact opposite of the persona. Fan culture spends years building houses (立人设, crafting a marketable character); one scandal brings the whole structure down. Brands 塌房 now and companies 塌房, and the spectators enjoying the wreckage are only eating melon (吃瓜).
Where does 塌房 come from?
A wave of mega-scandals did the work. Born in fan circles around 2020–2021, the metaphor hardened into common sense after 2021, most notoriously with Kris Wu's arrest, which taught the Chinese internet to expect that every idol's house eventually comes down. It is ordinary vocabulary well outside entertainment now, though gossip remains its busiest habitat.
