What does 世界这么大 mean?

The full line is 世界那么大,我想去看看: the world is so big, and I want to go and see it. It was a resignation letter of exactly ten Chinese characters, and that brevity is the point. Nobody attacked the boss, nobody listed grievances; a young teacher simply announced a wish. The line turned quitting into something wistful rather than bitter, and it became the caption for travel photos, sabbatical announcements and, in drier moments, jokes from people with no intention of leaving their desks. It also echoed against the decade's other vocabulary: the 打工人 who admires it from a cubicle and the 躺平 crowd who chose a different exit.

Where does 世界这么大 come from?

In April 2015, 顾少强, a psychology teacher at Henan Province Experimental Middle School, handed in her resignation with this single sentence. A photo of the letter spread across Weibo and the national media within days; reporters later followed her journey around the country, and she settled in Chengdu, where she opened a small guesthouse with her husband. Versions of the line were reprinted in year-end reviews as a symbol of the decade's most romantic idea of quitting.
