What does 那咋了 mean?
I am thirty and still not married. 那咋了? I went out to buy breakfast in my pyjamas. 那咋了? The phrase means roughly “so what of it”, with a northern Chinese colloquial flavour, and it is the internet’s default shrug. You drop it when someone points something out about you, or when you catch yourself in an awkward moment, to say: yes, and it does not bother me. It belongs to the mood of 反内耗, refusing to grind yourself down by overthinking, and of not living for other people’s approval. Cheerful and a bit cheeky rather than hostile, it often lands as the punchline after a mildly embarrassing confession. It is the verbal form of opting out of 内卷.
Where does 那咋了 come from?
鸭鸭米, a Douyin creator, posted livestream clips in early June 2024 in which 那咋了 was the answer to absolutely everything. That summer other creators and media accounts copied the format. By the end of the year it had turned up on several 2024 buzzword lists, including Douyin’s own annual meme roundup and the top ten internet buzzwords picked by 《语言文字周报》.
