What does 落地成盒 mean?
In 吃鸡, every match opens with a parachute jump, and the first seconds after landing are the most dangerous of the entire round. Die before finding a weapon and your gear drops as a crate for someone else to loot. 落地成盒 is the name for that exact humiliation: not just losing, but never getting to fight. The phrase escaped gaming years ago. Flunk the opening question of an interview, fold in the first minute of a pitch, and a friend might tell you that you landed and became a box.
Where does 落地成盒 come from?
绝地求生 entered Steam Early Access in March 2017 and Chinese players were quick to build their own vocabulary around it. The crate a dead player leaves behind is where the 盒 in the phrase comes from. Across the second half of 2017 the term was everywhere in livestream chats and internet cafes, usually as a self-mocking caption over a jump that lasted seconds. It has since become ordinary slang for any collapse that happens before the main event even starts.
