What does 老六 mean?
You are pushing a compound in 和平精英 and someone you never saw opens the door from the inside. That person is a 老六, literally “old number six.” Team games field five players, so the sixth is the one nobody accounted for: the camper who spends the match in a bush or a stairwell, skips every fight, and surfaces only to take the kill. The word began as a complaint about CS:GO and battle-royale players who would not teamfight, and it leaked into ordinary life. A colleague who says nothing in the meeting and later presents the idea as their own is a 职场老六. A friend whose phone dies exactly when the bill arrives is a 饭桌老六. Said to someone's face it is teasing, and it hides a compliment: you cannot bait a 老六 into doing anything they had not already planned.
Where does 老六 come from?
The term is usually traced to CS:GO, where a player who hung back instead of pushing with the team was said to be playing like a sixth man on a five-man squad. It stayed inside shooter communities for years. What broke it out was 暗区突围, the mobile tactical shooter Tencent released in 2022: in its extraction runs, patience and ambush pay better than aim, so sitting in a doorway until someone walked past became a legitimate strategy and then a whole personality. Clips titled 老六 piled up, and the reaction line “服了你个老六” became the stock answer to any dirty trick, in games and out. Within a year the word had largely detached from its source.
