What does based mean?

Based started as praise for not caring what anyone thinks. A based person posts the unpopular opinion, refuses to soften it, and takes the consequences without flinching; agreeing with the opinion is optional, respecting the nerve is not. In current use the edge has worn off: based now often just means I approve, but the original idea of stubborn authenticity still hums underneath.

Where does based come from?

The rapper Lil B, who calls himself the Based God, built the word in the late 2000s and early 2010s around being positive and doing you, telling interviewers that based meant being yourself even when it is not cool. Forums picked it up through the 2010s as a label for opinions that were fearless or forbidden, and by the 2020s it had softened into general approval across TikTok and Twitter.

How to use based
