What does 大水理论 mean?

大水 means plain purified water in outsized packaging, usually a 1.5 to 2 liter bottle parked on the desk all day. Under the theory, anyone still ordering milk tea or hand-brewed coffee has self-identified as 弱者, the weak. The joke works because the “strength” involved is nothing but hydration: no gym, no diet, just choosing the biggest, blandest drink on the shelf. Office workers post photos of their two-liter bottles like trophies and rank colleagues by bottle size, and the more absurd the claim, the better it lands. It is self-mockery and health-resolution theater in one line, with a splash of 佛系 fatalism.

Where does 大水理论 come from?

The slogan “弱者喝饮料,强者喝大水” took over Douyin's trending list on October 5, 2026, and within days desks across Chinese offices had sprouted two-liter bottles. Weibo users rallied under the tag 喝大水 the same week. On October 8, 2026, 大众新闻, the digital outlet of Shandong's 大众日报, ran a piece by reporter 张焕辰 following the trend; 腾讯新闻 republished it the same day. Sina's coverage read the fad as minimalist living and stress relief in a bottle: water costs little, asks nothing of you, and lets you feel virtuous at zero effort.
