What does 886 mean?

886 was the sound of leaving a Chinese chat room. The digits stand in for 拜拜咯, a drawn-out bye-bye, and they carry none of the finality of a formal farewell: you type them when you are slipping out of a group conversation, logging off for the night or hanging up on a friend. It belongs to the same era as emoticon codes and pager love notes, and it still reads as a small, friendly wave rather than a goodbye speech.

Where does 886 come from?

The form grew up in the chat rooms and QQ windows of the late 1990s and 2000s, when typing Chinese was slow and playful number homophones saved keystrokes. 88 for 拜拜 was already common, and 886, with the extra 六 sounding like the particle 咯, softened it into something closer to a shrug and a smile. The habit faded from everyday typing as phones got better input methods, but people who grew up online in that decade still end conversations with it.
